What is MusicLM?

MusicLM is a new artificial intelligence (AI) system created by researchers at Anthropic to generate music. AI systems are computer programs that can learn and make decisions on their own, without being told exactly what to do by humans. MusicLM is designed to compose music that sounds good to our ears!

How does MusicLM work?

To understand how MusicLM makes music, we first need to understand how AI systems learn. AI systems are trained on lots and lots of data - in MusicLM's case, this data included over 280,000 hours of music from all genres like pop, rock, jazz, classical and more. By analyzing all this music data, MusicLM figures out the patterns and structures that make up good music.

As AI researcher Dario Amodei explains, MusicLM is like "a musician that has listened to more music than any human could listen to in their lifetime." It uses what it has learned from all this music to generate new melodies, harmonies and rhythms.

What makes MusicLM special?

One thing that makes MusicLM really unique is that it creates music "note-by-note." As composer Holly Herndon says, "Most AI music has been created by stitching together pre-composed bits of music. MusicLM generates music from scratch."

This allows MusicLM to compose music that sounds more natural and flows well, instead of sounding choppy or disjointed. According to Anthropic researcher Prafulla Dhariwal, "with MusicLM, we can specify a genre, artist, instruments, tempo, and generate music note-by-note that matches the given prompt."

Can MusicLM replace human composers?

While MusicLM can create some impressive musical compositions, most experts believe it cannot fully replace human creativity and artistry. As musician Grimes says, "AI cannot yet make music with artistic intention."

There are many qualities that make human-composed music special, like conveying emotion and meaning through lyrics, having a unique style or voice, and connecting with listeners. MusicLM does not yet have human qualities like imagination, life experiences, and a creative vision to draw from.

So while MusicLM is an exciting advancement in AI, it still has a long way to go before it can compose music as beautifully and meaningfully as people can!
